Ride 5 days on this beautiful rail-to-trail plus some small roads in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This 180 mile ride will take you on through the Black Hills and onto the Mickelson trail which is one of the nation’s most scenic, historic and memorable cycling adventures. The converted “Rail to Trail” once provided the booming “Wild West” mining community of Deadwood with a means to transport ore, supplies and people along its rugged path. As you cycle this well maintained, but challenging trail, you will discover unrivaled natural beauty, geologic wonders and an abundance of wildlife in combination with historic ghost towns, train trestles, bridges and tunnels, reminders of a bygone era. This is 5 day end to end tour on the Mickelson Trail and small roads is considered solidly intermediate due to long continuous grades, higher elevations and road traffic. You will spend 4 nights on the trail in both historic hotels and other lodging on the trail and Rapid City. All lodging is first class with beautiful views and breakfast available at some destinations. Your luggage will be moved each day to the next lodging location. Your tour starts in Rapid City, SD where you can spend the first night before you start riding if you purchase a hotel before the tour as an extra. Breakfast is included in some locations, shuttle from Edgemont to Hill City, tour map, Ride with GPS, luggage shuttle, luggage tags and Mickelson themed T-shirt. Your tour will end in Rapid City, SD where you will ride back to pick up your car. Day 0 - arrive in Rapid City at your hotel if you purchased as an extra for your tour Day 1 - Ride from Rapid City to Deadwood on State roads 51 miles - see some of its historic buildings and casinos in Deadwood Day 2- Ride to Hill City 47 miles - Tallest point of the tour with many bridges and tunnels Day 3 - Monument day - Ride 18 miles to see Crazy Horse Monument (can add Mt. Rushmore 20 miles) and end in Custer Day 4 - Custer to Edgemont - 44 miles then shuttle back to Hill City - today’s route descends peacefully through the forests and meadows Day 5 - Hill City to Rapid City - 25 miles back to your car - luggage at hotel where you began
